"Thanks to coordination between Hungary and Poland, we can announce a huge success today," Mateusz Morawiecki said after the EU summit. PM Viktor Orban said Brussels' elite has attempted to mix politics with finances in order to establish a new regime. "We have thwarted it. There is no chance of building such a regime," he said.

"Nothing can happen without the consent of Hungary, Poland and the Visegrad Group," Mateusz Morawiecki said, commenting on the EU summit in Brussels. The introduction of any new financial mechanism by the European Council requires a unanimous decision, as clearly stated in the Treaties, the Polish premier pointed out.
Wanted to establish a new regime
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the summit was not about the current punitive proceedings, as "they wanted to establish a new regime, a new mechanism, linking politics with finances".
"We have thwarted it," Mr Orban said, pointing out that by taking a firm stand, they have eliminated the chances of creating such a biased political system. The Hungarian premier described it as a victory that the disbursement of funds would not be subject to political conditions and that the Article 7 procedure against Hungary would be closed by the end of the year.
Polish counterpart invaluable
Viktor Orban also said that the negotiations would not have been so successful without his Polish counterpart. "We are fortunate to have fought on his team and we are delighted that the leader of the V4 bloc is an experienced former finance minister."
